Trump’s ‘Great American State Fair’—billed as a once-in-a-generation 250th birthday celebration—isn’t the unifying event it claims to be. Eight states are ditching it days before it starts, and the reasons cut deeper than budget woes.
The fair is a 16-day showcase on the National Mall starting June 25. At least eight states—Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Maine, Oregon, Washington, Pennsylvania—have said they won’t take part. Organizers from Freedom 250, the federal taskforce running it, insist every state will be represented somehow.
North Carolina cited a $100k cost to participate. Oregon mentioned both cost and growing partisan concerns. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, a frequent Trump critic, called it “ridiculous” to charge states for exhibits—using taxpayer money.
Illinois opted out but Peoria Riverfront Museum will represent it. The state doesn’t know how the museum was picked by Freedom 250. Maine and Pennsylvania gave no explanation but plan their own local celebrations.
Freedom 250 says the fair will have over 150 exhibits from 56 states and territories. But most of the no-shows are Democratic-led states, pointing to a partisan split in how the event is perceived.
This fair won’t heal divides—it’ll lay them bare for all to see.
